Which naming conventions are used most in programming?
Every language and context has its preference. camelCase, starting with a lowercase letter, is used for variables and functions in JavaScript, Java and C#. PascalCase, capitalising every word, is used for classes, React components and TypeScript types. snake_case, joining words with underscores, is the standard in Python, Ruby and SQL databases. kebab-case, joining words with hyphens, dominates in CSS, URLs and file names on case-sensitive systems. CONSTANT_CASE is used for constants in most languages. Following the convention of the surrounding ecosystem improves readability and consistency.
Why does naming consistency matter?
Consistent naming is not merely cosmetic, it is fundamental to maintainability: it lets you search and replace reliably across the codebase, it lets linters enforce rules automatically, it lowers the cognitive load of reading unfamiliar code, it prevents subtle bugs in case-sensitive languages, it makes automatic documentation generation easier, and it makes the code predictable. An inconsistent naming style is a code smell that often points at wider quality problems.
How do you pick the right convention for your project?
Follow the established conventions of the language and framework: JavaScript uses camelCase for most things and PascalCase for classes and components, Python uses snake_case almost exclusively, and CSS uses kebab-case. For a new project, read the official style guides such as Google, Airbnb or PEP 8. For an existing project, match what is already there. Configure ESLint, Prettier or Black to enforce it automatically. If you work across languages, accept that the same concept takes different shapes: getUserById in JavaScript is get_user_by_id in Python, and that is correct in both.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between camelCase and PascalCase?
The only difference is the first letter: camelCase starts lowercase (firstName, getUserData) while PascalCase starts uppercase (FirstName, UserService). By convention camelCase covers variables, functions, methods and properties, while PascalCase is reserved for classes, interfaces, types, components and constructors. In TypeScript and React you write const myVariable and function myFunction in camelCase, and class MyClass or interface MyInterface in PascalCase.
Why does Python prefer snake_case over camelCase?
The Python philosophy captured in PEP 8 puts readability first: user_name reads more easily than userName because the underscores act as visual spaces between words. On a text screen, lowercase is easier to scan than alternating capitals. On top of that, Guido van Rossum specified it in the original style guide and the community has kept it for consistency. It is a convention rather than a technical advantage.
How do I convert between styles programmatically in my code?
Popular libraries cover it: lodash gives you _.camelCase, _.snakeCase and _.kebabCase, npm has change-case, and Ruby has inflection. In Python, use the inflection package or a couple of small regular expressions. A generic split works like this: camelCase and PascalCase break at uppercase boundaries with /(?<=[a-z])(?=[A-Z])/, while snake_case and kebab-case break on underscores or hyphens. Then join the pieces with the separator you want. This tool lets you experiment with the conversions before you implement them.
