What is a slug and why does it matter for SEO?
A slug is the part of a URL that identifies a specific page in readable form. In "mystore.com/products/blue-cotton-shirt" the slug is "blue-cotton-shirt". Well designed slugs improve SEO for four reasons: search engines use the words in the URL as a relevance signal; users can understand the content before they click; the URL is easier to share and remember; and it avoids encoding problems with special characters. A good slug is short, descriptive and built around relevant keywords.
What are the best practices for SEO friendly slugs?
The golden rules for optimised slugs: use lowercase only to avoid case-sensitivity issues, separate words with hyphens rather than underscores or spaces, drop stop words such as "the", "of" and "a" when they add nothing, keep the slug to three to five meaningful keywords, strip accents and special characters, and never include session parameters or bare numeric IDs without context. A slug should be readable and understandable out of context.
How do you handle duplicate slugs and URL changes?
Every slug must be unique inside its context. To avoid duplicates you can append a numeric suffix (article, article-2, article-3), include a date for time-bound content (black-friday-2024), or add a qualifier (nike-air-shoes versus nike-air-trainers). When you change a slug that is already published, ALWAYS add a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one to preserve SEO value and avoid broken links. Never delete a URL that may be indexed or linked without redirecting it.

Frequently asked questions
Should I use hyphens or underscores to separate words?
Always hyphens. Google has confirmed that it treats hyphens as word separators while underscores are treated as part of the word. "blue-widget" is indexed as "blue" and "widget" separately, so the page can be found by either term. "blue_widget" is indexed as the single token "blue_widget", which loses that flexibility. Hyphens are also easier to read and select correctly with a double click.
How does slug length affect SEO?
Google publishes no strict limit, but the practical guidance is to keep the full URL under about 75 characters so it displays completely in search results, and to keep slugs to three to five words. Longer is not better for ranking, and excessively long URLs can look spammy and reduce click-through rate. If your title is "10 incredible tips to improve your productivity while working from home", a good slug is "productivity-tips-working-from-home", not the entire headline.
Do I really need to strip accents from slugs?
It is strongly recommended for universal compatibility. Modern browsers handle UTF-8 in URLs, but legacy systems, analytics tools and third-party software can still choke on it. It is also far easier to type a URL without accents when you are dictating it or writing it from memory. Converting forms such as an accented o to a plain o is standard practice and fully accepted by search engines. This tool applies it automatically.
