Why do you need strong, unique passwords?
Weak and reused passwords are the leading cause of security breaches and account takeovers. Modern brute-force attacks can try billions of combinations per second on GPUs, and common passwords show up in leaked databases such as RockYou, LinkedIn and Adobe that attackers replay in credential stuffing campaigns. A genuinely secure password has to be unique to each service and never reused, long enough at a minimum of 12 to 16 characters and ideally 20 or more, and made of an unpredictable mix of uppercase, lowercase, digits and special symbols. This tool generates cryptographically random passwords that meet all of those criteria.
What is entropy and how does it measure password strength?
Entropy measures the unpredictability of a password in bits, calculated as log2(possible_characters^length). An 8-character lowercase-only password carries around 37 bits of entropy and can be cracked in seconds. A 12-character mixed password using uppercase, lowercase, digits and symbols reaches around 78 bits, which would take centuries of brute force. As a rough scale: under 40 bits is weak and should not be used, 40 to 60 bits is reasonable for non-critical accounts, 60 to 80 bits is strong for general use, 80 to 100 bits is very strong for important accounts, and 100 bits or more is excellent. This tool shows the estimated entropy of every password it generates.
What are the current best practices for managing passwords?
Use a trustworthy password manager such as the open source Bitwarden, 1Password or KeePassXC to store a unique, complex password for every account. Turn on two-factor authentication wherever it is offered, preferring an authenticator app or a physical security key such as a YubiKey over SMS. Never reuse a password between services, however unimportant one of them looks. For the master password you have to memorize, consider a passphrase of four to six random words (the diceware method), which is easier to recall and just as strong. Check regularly whether your credentials appear in known breaches using haveibeenpwned.com.

Frequently asked questions
Are the generated passwords genuinely random and secure?
Yes. This tool uses the browser crypto.getRandomValues() API, a cryptographically secure pseudorandom number generator (CSPRNG) seeded from operating system entropy sources. It is the same mechanism professional security applications rely on. On top of that, everything runs locally in your browser: the generated password is NEVER transmitted to any server, so your privacy is fully preserved.
How many characters should my password have?
We recommend a minimum of 16 characters for important accounts such as email, banking and your main social networks, and 12 characters for less critical services. As computing power keeps growing through GPUs, ASICs and eventually quantum computing, longer passwords give better long-term protection. Where the service allows it, use 20 or more characters. Remember that length beats complexity: a 20-character lowercase password is stronger than an 8-character one full of symbols.
Should I include special symbols in my password?
Special symbols such as !@#$%^&* meaningfully increase entropy by expanding the character set from around 62 to around 95. Some legacy systems restrict them or break on specific characters, though. Whenever the system accepts them without trouble, include them. If you hit incompatibilities, a longer password without symbols can be just as secure: 20 alphanumeric characters carry more entropy than 12 characters with symbols.
